Sustainable Forestry Initiative

The SFI® program is a national program designed to encourage landowners, loggers, foresters and others to promote and support sustainable, environmentally sound forestry practices. This comprehensive set of principles, objectives and performance measures addresses the environmental, social and economic aspects of conducting forest management activities. This approach requires long-term commitments to forest management to ensure productive, healthy forests for future generations.

The SFI® program defines how the forest and related resources shall be sustained. For example, the SFI® program requires protection of water quality, prompt reforestation after harvest, promoting wildlife conservation, and continuously improving our practices and forest management activities to ensure long-term forest productivity and usage. To ensure these resources are protected, the program has specific requirements that must be met in order for a landowner or company to prove compliance.

Stimson has a long-standing tradition of responsible forest management. Not only does Stimson support the principles of SFI® program, but has taken that commitment a step further. In 2000, all of our forest lands and log procurement programs underwent a rigorous independent third party review for compliance with SFI® program standards. This extensive review involved evaluating our records and conducting on-site inspections of our forest management activities and log and timber purchasing programs. The audit resulted in verification that Stimson complied with all principles contained in the SFI® program. As the company grows, new acquisitions will also undergo this audit process. But the process does not stop there. Every three years, our operations will be again audited to verify continued compliance with SFI® program and document our unrelenting drive for improvement of all aspects of our land management.

The practice of sustainable forestry requires all parties involved in the production of wood products from forest land to work together. This allows us to better address environmental as well as forest productivity issues to ensure sound management practices. Landowners are encourage to utilize the services of qualified resource professionals and qualified logging professionals. Timber harvesters need to be fully knowledgeable of the local regulations affecting timber harvesting. We also encourage loggers to attend professional logger training programs and to become Qualified Logging Professionals (QLPs). It is Stimson goal to make regular progress towards the purchasing of logs from outside producers exclusively from landowners who are utilizing QLPs. Furthermore, beginning in the year 2002, all timber harvesting under Stimson’s control shall be conducted exclusively by QLPs.

It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the utilization of forest products today does not jeopardize the usage of the same resources by future generations. Our continued commitment in the SFI® program will verify Stimson Lumber Company’s products are obtained from trees that are grown and harvested in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner.

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® program is a commitment, a belief, a broader view of our forests. Join us in our commitment. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® program developed by American Forest & Paper Association is meant to provide a long-term approach to the environment and a direction for us to travel. This definition was adopted by the International Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.

"Sustainable forestry means managing our forests to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs by practicing a land stewardship ethic which integrates the growing, nurturing, and harvesting of trees for useful products with the conservation of soil, air and water quality, and wildlife and fish habitat."
