One of the most valuable assets of Stimson Lumber Company is its forestlands. The primary
purpose of these lands is to provide high quality harvestable timber on an economical basis through sustainable forestry practices. Sustainable forestry means managing our forests to meet the
needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This is done by practicing a land stewardship which integrates the growing, nurturing, and
harvesting of trees for useful wood products with the conservation of soil, air and water quality and fish and wildlife habitat.
Stimson's commitment to sustainable forestry is guided by our forestry principles.
These principles have been developed to help integrate the economic production of wood products with the conservation of other forest resources:
PRACTICE a balanced and thoughtful land ethic.
USE
and promote forestry practices that are both economically and environmentally responsible.
MANAGE
forest resources to maintain or improve their health and productivity and protect them from wildfire, insects, disease and other damaging agents.
PROMOTE
successful reforestation of forestland, including lands currently under-productive, thus maximizing forest productivity.
MANAGE
forests in biological, geologically, historically, and visually significant areas in a manner that takes into account their special qualities.
UTILIZE
state-of-the art science and technology to enhance forest resource management into the future.
STRENGTHEN
educational and communication efforts to improve understanding of the conservation of forest resources and be responsive to public concerns.
PROVIDE
recreation opportunities consistent with private landowner rights and objectives, forest and road protection, and forest worker and public safety.
ENSURE a safe and healthy work environment and protect public health and safety.
Stimson's management activities will be planned, implemented, and
administered in economically efficient manners that are consistent with these Forest Principles and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® program (SFIsm).
